Say Thanks. Give a letter.
When you came home today and fetched your mail, were you hoping that just maybe someone was sweet enough to send you a handwritten letter? And I bet that’s what you found wasn’t it? A thoughtful, encouraging, handwritten note.
I’m just kidding. My guess is NO. Instead, you probably received that past due credit card bill that you were anxiously anticipating, or better yet the exciting local town flyer advertising a sketchy Chinese restaurant (that you would never eat at no matter the discount) or an insurance company with a lousy name like “Dasher’s Insurance.”
Oh, how I can relate! That is what I usually receive in the mail almost daily and it bums me out! It sure is nothing to write home about.
Now, wait a second…I just used that as an expression, but what if I’m on to something? What if we did that? What if we wrote someone back home? Or perhaps wrote someone that we haven’t talked to in a while? Or someone we know who needs encouragement? What if we were intentional about blessing someone besides expecting to be blessed all the time? Or think about this…what if, by blessing someone, it blessed you in return?
As much as you desire or even expect a handwritten letter when you come home to your bill-filled mailbox, think about people in your life who want the same thing or even need the same thing. It is said, “it is better to give than to receive.” So as much as you would love to receive a considerate personal note in the mail, why don’t you write one to somebody instead?
I charge you! Begin to “Love, ink!”
Love, ink is exactly as it sounds. Learn to love to write in ink by writing someone an intentional letter. These days, we revert to social media, emails, text messages, and tweets to express how we feel about someone. That’s easy! Anyone can do that. It’s quick, informal and at our fingertips (literally.) So how about using our minds, hearts, and hands to create a physical sign of care. I encourage you to pick up a pen (or pencil) and show off your lovely handwriting through uplifting words.
Since it is Thanksgiving, it would be fitting to write a note of gratitude to someone unexpectantly. Tell them honestly why you are thankful for them. Take your time and be sincere. Think of the feeling they will get when they open their mailbox and find your letter. Isn’t it nice to know that it’s likely that letter has the potential to not only make their day, but maybe their whole year?
